(2006-2015) - The Eyes Wide Open Artistic Peace Movement

Our story begins in early 2006 with a young activist family who had a vision of using hip hip hop culture to inspire positive change in the world. Shiyloh aka CGK and Shaliyshah aka Cali Greens came to Montreal from California with a spirit of unity. They were seeking new ways to raise the level of consciousness in diverse communities. Upon arrival they quickly were welcomed into the Quebecois, Francophone as well as the anglophone arts community. They quickly learned that the artistic community was heavily influenced by hip hop culture and wanted to contribute their authentic unique black experience to the cultural landscape of  this newly forming scene. They partnered and integrated themselves within the organizations and groups of people who saw the value of the budding Quebec arts multi language environment. This is when they initiated an open think tank form of discussion and gatherings called The Eyes Wide Open Artistic Peace Movement.  

Shiyloh aka CGK and Shaliyshah aka Cali Greens had a powerful vision for using hip-hop culture to inspire positive change. They embraced the diverse artistic community in Montreal and initiated The Eyes Wide Open Artistic Peace Movement to foster discussions and gatherings for this purpose. Their efforts were aimed at contributing their authentic black experience to the evolving cultural landscape of the city’s burgeoning arts scene.

(2006-2010) - THE EYES WIDE OPEN ARTISTIC PEACE MOVEMENT

The Eyes Wide Open Artistic Peace Movement is a transformative and impactful initiative that harnesses the power of art to promote peace, understanding, and social change. This movement, which emerged in the early 21st century, seeks to challenge societal norms, stimulate critical thinking, and foster empathy through various artistic mediums. It encourages artists to use their creative voices to address pressing global issues, such as conflict, inequality, and environmental degradation. By employing art as a tool for communication, the movement transcends language barriers and engages individuals from diverse backgrounds, sparking dialogue and inspiring action.

One of the key strengths of the Eyes Wide Open Artistic Peace Movement lies in its ability to amplify marginalized voices and shed light on underrepresented perspectives. Through their art, participating artists can bring attention to social injustices, discrimination, and human rights abuses, drawing the attention of a wider audience and generating empathy and solidarity. By using their creative talents to raise awareness and provoke thought, these artists contribute to a collective consciousness that challenges the status quo and advocates for positive change. The movement's inclusive nature welcomes artists from different cultures, backgrounds, and disciplines, fostering collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas, which further enriches the impact and reach of their artistic expressions.

In summary, the Eyes Wide Open Artistic Peace Movement is an inspiring and transformative initiative that leverages the power of art to promote peace, encourage dialogue, and effect social change. By amplifying marginalized voices, fostering collaboration, and transcending cultural boundaries, this movement has the potential to make a lasting impact on global consciousness and contribute to a more equitable and compassionate society.

Through the rich discussions and interactions facilitated by the Eyes Wide Open Artistic Peace Movement (EWOAPM), Shiyloh and Shaliyshah took a step further and established the Sovereign Music Movement. This self-publishing collective aimed to provide an alternative to the oversaturated hip-hop market and create entrepreneurial opportunities, addressing issues within the mainstream music industry. Their door-to-door sales campaigns helped them become an integral part of Montreal's urban and black music scene, much like the iconic Mont Royal Tam Tams are to the city's summer culture.

2015 - SOVEREIGN MUSIC MOVEMENT

The Sovereign music movement has had a significant impact on the Canadian music scene, bringing about a renewed sense of cultural identity and empowerment. This movement, which emerged in the late 20th century, sought to reclaim and celebrate Indigenous voices and narratives through music. By highlighting Indigenous languages, traditions, and contemporary experiences, Sovereign artists have challenged mainstream notions of what Canadian music represents. Their work has fostered greater recognition and appreciation of Indigenous cultures, creating a space for diverse artistic expressions within the Canadian music industry.

The Sovereign music movement has not only revitalized the Canadian music scene but has also played a crucial role in fostering reconciliation and understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. It has provided a platform for Indigenous musicians to share their stories, struggles, and triumphs, allowing for a deeper appreciation of their rich heritage and ongoing resilience. Moreover, the movement has served as a catalyst for collaborations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, leading to innovative and genre-blurring musical works. Overall, the Sovereign music movement has made a lasting impact on the Canadian music landscape by amplifying Indigenous voices, enriching cultural diversity, and promoting a more inclusive and equitable music industry.

From their initial grassroots efforts, the Sovereign Music Movement (SMM) gradually gained recognition as a pioneering arts collective in North America. Just as they were gaining interest and exploring collaborative opportunities that aligned with their identity, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, halting their door-to-door initiatives and plans for a physical location. In response, the members of the Eyes Wide Open Artistic Peace Movement (EWOAPM) and SMM began seeking new ways to support artists during these challenging times.

Focusing on sustaining artists and cultural production, SMM shifted its approach towards complete and immersive cultural experiences, serving as an alternative to the traditional record label system. They emphasized the importance of direct sales methodology as opposed to conventional methods that might not be as beneficial for emerging artists.

As circumstances evolved, members of EWOAPM/SMM established the Humblux cultural production agency. This move allowed them to continue their journey with the same spirit that had fueled their earlier endeavors, adapting to the changing landscape while remaining committed to their mission.

2020 - HUMBLUX

Humblux is an innovative and visionary creative collective that has made a significant impact in the fashion and visual arts scene. Based in Montreal, Canada, Humblux stands out for its ability to seamlessly merge music, fashion, and visual storytelling, creating a multi-dimensional and immersive experience for its audience. Led by a team of talented artists, designers, photographers, and videographers, Humblux has carved a niche for itself by combining cutting-edge fashion designs with captivating visual aesthetics and storytelling.

One of the most striking aspects of Humblux is its commitment to pushing creative boundaries and challenging traditional norms. The collective's fashion designs are characterized by their intricate and thought-provoking elements, evoking emotions and making bold statements. Their clothing pieces are not only stylish but also convey powerful messages, addressing social issues and personal growth. By incorporating thought-provoking visual storytelling into their fashion showcases, Humblux elevates the art of fashion to an entirely new level, blurring the lines between fashion, visual arts, and storytelling.

Moreover, Humblux has garnered attention and respect for its dedication to authenticity and originality. The collective stays true to its artistic vision and values, refusing to conform to mainstream trends or compromise on creative expression. Humblux's commitment to authenticity has earned them a dedicated following of like-minded individuals who appreciate the depth and sincerity behind their work. Through their creative endeavors and boundary-pushing projects, Humblux continues to inspire and captivate audiences, solidifying their position as a trailblazing force in the fashion and visual arts landscape.

In 2023, having overcome the setbacks caused by COVID-19, Humblux is ready to embark on new ventures within the cultural landscape of Montreal and the global community. Adhering to their foundational principles of addressing complex challenges, they have chosen to center their efforts on the issues faced by black anglophone cultural producers in Quebec.

Recognizing the need to create sustainable solutions, members of the Humblux collective have introduced the BCE (Black Cultural Exchange) initiative. With the aspiration that the BCE will garner the necessary support to operate year-round, Humblux aims to address and alleviate the problems faced by black anglophone cultural producers. This step demonstrates their ongoing commitment to fostering positive change and facilitating a more inclusive cultural environment that amplifies diverse voices and perspectives.

PROBLEM

Black anglophone cultural producers in Quebec face a range of challenges that impact their ability to thrive and contribute fully to the cultural landscape. One key issue is the limited representation and recognition of Black anglophone artists, writers, musicians, and filmmakers within Quebec's predominantly French-speaking cultural scene. This underrepresentation can result in a lack of visibility, opportunities, and resources for Black anglophone cultural producers.

Language barriers also pose a significant challenge. The dominance of the French language in Quebec's cultural sector can make it difficult for Black anglophone artists to access funding, reach wider audiences, and establish networks within the industry. This linguistic divide can contribute to a sense of exclusion and hinder the growth and development of Black anglophone cultural production.

Moreover, systemic racism and discrimination are persistent obstacles faced by Black anglophone cultural producers in Quebec. Prejudice and bias can limit opportunities for collaboration, exhibition, and professional advancement. Black anglophone artists may encounter barriers in securing funding, finding venues, or receiving critical recognition due to systemic inequalities.

Additionally, the intersectionality of being Black and anglophone within the Quebec context can compound the challenges faced by cultural producers. Navigating multiple identities and cultural contexts can be complex, and Black anglophone artists may face unique difficulties in finding their place in Quebec's cultural fabric.

Addressing these problems requires concerted efforts from various stakeholders, including government agencies, cultural institutions, funding bodies, and the wider community. Encouraging diverse representation, fostering inclusive policies, and creating platforms for collaboration and dialogue can help empower and amplify the voices and contributions of Black anglophone cultural producers in Quebec.

2023 - BLACK CULTURAL EMBASSY (BCE)

Montreal, Quebec - [August 1, 2023- November 1, 2023] – Humblux is pleased to announce the initiation of the Black Cultural Embassy (BCE) in Montreal, Quebec, a humble contribution to the city's cultural landscape. Humblux aims to celebrate and showcase the rich heritage, history, and contributions of Black communities in Montreal, fostering unity, education, and empowerment.

Located in the heart of the Plateau, the Humblux (BCE) will serve as a vibrant hub for cultural expression, dialogue, and community engagement. This Embassy will offer a wide range of campaigns, events, and products to promote understanding, diversity, and (recognition). Through its diverse offerings, the BCE seeks to bridge gaps, break down barriers, and create a more equitable society.

Humblux will house an exhibition space, presenting curated displays that highlight the significant achievements, experiences, and narratives of Black communities throughout history. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore and engage within a thought-provoking environment that address various aspects of Black culture, art, music, literature, and social movements.

In addition to the exhibition space, the BCC will provide a dynamic range of programming, including music listenings, think tank discussions, performances, and film screenings. These events will invite cultural producers, scholars, artists, activists, and community organizers to share their expertise and perspectives, fostering critical conversations and inspiring growth of community commerce.

The embassy will also serve as a retail space, offering a humble luxury boutique that houses a micro cafe, a collection of selected rewear and exclusive on-demand-clothing options relating to Black culture, history, and experiences. 

This invaluable resource of  knowledge products will support entrepreneurial efforts to develop new narratives that celebrate the richness and diversity of Black heritage.

The establishment of the Black Cultural Embassy has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of the humblux cultural producers who recognize the importance of preserving and promoting Black culture. We extend our deepest gratitude to all those who have contributed to this project and invite the community to join us in celebrating this important moment.

Humblux will be opening its doors to the public for this special project on August 1, 2023 through November 1, 2023.
